Through my work, I materialize ephemeral phenomena, such as light and color, giving them a stronger physical presence.

The resulting objects and spaces make people more aware of their own surroundings, making them feel more present and bringing them closer to their constantly changing environment.

Benediktas Burdulis (1990) was born in Vilnius, Lithuania but grew up in the USA. He received a bachelor's degree in design from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2013, and a master's degree in architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2016. He has worked for MOS Architects in New York City, at Werkplaats Vincent de Rijk in Rotterdam, Studio Tomás Saraceno in Berlin, and has taught architecture as an adjunct professor at Lawrence Technological University and as a teaching fellow at Dartmouth College. He has been a resident at SPACE10, IKEA’s Future Living Lab in Copenhagen, and at Autodesk's Pier 9 workshop in San Francisco.
He is represented by Volume Gallery in Chicago, and has exhibited work at galleries and museums in Europe and North America. He is a certified mindfulness meditation teacher through MMTCP. In early 2018, he founded the architectural design practice Archival Studies. He left the company at the end of 2022 to continue on his own creative path. OPTICAL SURFACE STUDIES
How can objects be made to take on and emphasize the ephemeral qualities of the environment and the light around them? Can they, at the same time, offer experiences of sensing one’s own visual perception? Can these small visual disruptions in a space become strong enough to cause people to slow down and ‘sense themselves sensing’ the space? In order to create such visual experiences on an object scale, their perceived effects need to be more concentrated than if they were at the immersive scale of a building. This asks for materials and surfaces that are very responsive to light.

The results of these first tests are objects with surfaces that react to ambient light and their surrounding spaces with different techniques and in different orientations. It’s important not to focus too much on the object itself, but rather on the visual and spatial experience that it provides.

OPTICAL SURFACE STUDIES: REFLECTIONThe bright reflective nature of the milled aluminum objects allows them to pick up abstracted reflections of the surrounding space, and gives them the ability to shift in appearance as the viewer moves in relation to the surface. The milled facets break up the surface and create three different angles to catch reflections on, enlarging the surface area and preventing it from becoming a continuous mirror. This abstracts the reflected surroundings, causing the effect to be more ephemeral and less predictable.

OPTICAL SURFACE STUDIES: REFRACTION

The two-sided lens geometry of these transparent acrylic objects bends light as it passes through, concentrating and dispersing it through refraction. The light is visually amplified into bright caustics that are cast onto the surrounding space. As a side effect of the lens geometry, the object distorts the surroundings that are seen through it, offering a moment of visual disruption.

This transparency allows the patterns to visually overlap and create interference, or moiré. These interference patterns shift as one moves around the object, giving it an ephemeral materiality, like a surface that is constantly changing.

LIGHT CATCHING PANELS
Enhancing our Perception of Light

Precise CNC milling, silicone molds, and plaster casting were used here to create an optically-patterned wall which highlights and amplifies the daylight entering an interior space.
The most effective detail is the varying curve that runs through each fluted groove. When hit with direct light, it creates a subtle and moving wave of shadow that reacts to and emphasizes the constantly changing nature of the light.
It’s a subtle effect that you may not notice at first, but when you do, you will likely begin to pay more attention and notice the light in the space more strongly. The goal is to make people more aware of their own perception and sensing of space.

DAYLIGHT STUDY

Daylight Study attempts to elevate the beautiful effect of sunlight entering an interior space to a transcendent state, with the goal of creating an environment that is optimistic, mystical, and stimulating yet serene.

The space distills daylight as it enters, and emphasizes the natural sequence of colors that the light goes through over the course of a day. The light is given a stronger physical presence as it is caught on the milled reliefs that have been created using custom-drawn CNC toolpaths. The resulting shadows give these patterns a vibrating optical effect that makes viewers aware of their own vision.

The space aims to slow people down, and to bring them closer to nature and to their own experience of perception.
